💊 British Bases hand over 14 mosquito traps to Akrotiri wetland communities to reduce nuisance and disease risk
The British Bases have handed over 14 mosquito trapping units to communities surrounding the Akrotiri wetlands on Monday in an effort to reduce mosquito nuisance and the risk of disease. The Kourion and Limassol municipalities received 10 and 4 traps respectively, which will operate throughout the summer and autumn as part of an integrated mosquito management programme.
The Akrotiri Salt Lake and marshland, the largest wetland complex in Cyprus, serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes despite year-round control efforts by the Joint Services Health Unit. Captured mosquito species will be monitored weekly in laboratories to track populations and guide ongoing control measures.
Officials urged residents to prevent stagnant water accumulation and to use personal protection like repellent, especially during dusk and dawn. The municipalities will maintain the traps while health units continue monitoring and sharing findings with Cyprus experts to ensure a comprehensive approach to mosquito control.
