📰 Data Protection Commission probes election-day campaign messages
The Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection is investigating complaints that voters received campaign messages on election day via SMS, Viber, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The probe will examine whether senders obtained proper consent and whether messages were sent only to individuals listed on updated electoral registers; if not, regulators say personal data rules may have been breached.
Commissioner Maria Christofidou said such communications are not covered by the 48-hour pre-election restriction but still must respect consent requirements. Complaints have been submitted and the office will complete data collection after the electoral process ends to establish the full scope of messages and complaints.
Supervisory checks are being carried out at polling stations to ensure voter lists contain only names, surnames and voter identification numbers without extra personal identifiers. Early inspections indicate the directive has been followed so far.
