📰 Edek leader Nikos Anastasiou resigns as party faces worst election result
Nikos Anastasiou resigned as leader of social democratic Edek on Sunday evening after the party looked set to lose all its parliamentary seats following national elections. Early tallies put Edek at around three percent of the vote, the lowest result in the party’s 56-year history, triggering Anastasiou’s departure.
Anastasiou, who did not stand in this year’s election, took over the party in June last year after Marinos Sizopoulos unexpectedly resigned. Sizopoulos had led Edek for 11 years and faced criticism after a five percent showing in the 2024 European Parliament vote. Party officials say they will announce next steps and a leadership process in the coming days.
