📰 Aglantzia to hold by-election after deputy mayor elected to House of Representatives
Aglantzia will hold a by-election after deputy mayor Andreas Constantinou won a seat in the House of Representatives for DISY in the Nicosia district, creating a vacancy in the newly established Nicosia municipality. Under local government law the deputy mayor’s post cannot remain vacant, and once Constantinou’s parliamentary election is finalised and he assumes his duties, formal procedures will be triggered. The Interior Ministry is expected to announce the election, which must be held within 45 days of the seat becoming vacant, and the winner will serve the remainder of the municipal council’s term.
Constantinou led Aglantzia as mayor from 2020 and became deputy mayor after the 2024 local government reform. The Returning Officer is due to set the candidacy submission deadline and the Sunday for polling. The local contest is seen as one of the first tests of public sentiment following the recent parliamentary vote and parties have limited time to organise.
