⛪ Race for Metropolitan of Paphos Intensifies as New Candidates Emerge
The contest to elect a new Metropolitan of Paphos has shifted as several clergy have entered while others withdrew. Archimandrite Grigorios Ioannidis, protosyncellus of the Trimithous diocese, has expressed interest; Archimandrite Sofronios of Trooditissa Monastery and Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis have submitted candidacies. Bishop Christoforos of Karpasia and Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria have withdrawn from consideration.
Local church circles in Paphos are discussing the possible candidacy of Ioannis, abbot of the Stavropegic Monastery of Apostle Barnabas, whose pastoral and administrative experience would add weight to the field. The Holy Synod is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, May 26 to approve the final candidate list; if no procedural issues arise an immediate election of the new Metropolitan remains possible.
