📰 Data protection complaints after Cyprus elections fewer than in 2021, 400 polling stations checked
Complaints to the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection following Sunday’s elections were lower than during the 2021 parliamentary polls, Commissioner Maria Christofidou said, with officials carrying out checks at 400 polling stations nationwide, including for the first time in Paphos. Christofidou described the general picture as positive with no significant issues identified so far and said final statistics and the total number of complaints will be released in the coming days. She praised her office staff and the Election Service for their cooperation and immediate response to issues raised.
Complaints received since February dealt mainly with phone calls, text messages, Viber communications and two cases involving the public announcement of voters’ names and details. Christofidou noted many late complaints reflected confusion about her office’s remit—assessing personal data processing and consent—rather than the separate ban on advertising in the final 48 hours before elections. She also noted May 24, 2026 marked eight years since the GDPR came into force in Cyprus.
