📰 Over 20 votive statue bases uncovered at Apollo sanctuary in Frangissa

Archaeologists uncovered more than 20 ancient votive statue bases at the Apollo sanctuary in Frangissa, near Pera Orinis, during the fifth season of excavations. Many bases were found in their original positions and some still retain intact feet, providing rare contextual evidence compared with earlier finds used as 19th-century backfill. The season was led by Matthias Recke with fieldwork directed by Philipp Kobusch; clay statue fragments recovered offer the first evidence in Cyprus that clay figurines were mounted on limestone bases rather than placed directly on the ground.

The sanctuary, first excavated in 1885 by Max Ohnefalsch-Richter and later forgotten, was relocated through recent research and is now being studied with modern methods. Excavators also uncovered bases closely stacked atop older layers and undisturbed pottery deposits dating to the Archaic period, indicating long-term activity and site reorganisation. The department of antiquities says the discoveries shed light on religious practice, social life and the organisation of Cypriot sanctuaries from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period.
