📰 Surveys place Cyprus among Europe’s most exhausted workforces

Nearly half of workers in Cyprus report high levels of exhaustion, according to recent surveys. The European Working Conditions Survey found about 44% of Cypriot employees feel physically exhausted at the end of the working day—the highest rate among 35 countries surveyed—while Gallup data show 56% experienced stress “a lot” the previous day, compared with a European average of 39%.

Public reaction to those figures is mixed, with some commenters dismissing claims of burnout and others pointing to long hours in physically demanding jobs. Experts note modern exhaustion often takes less visible forms—constant connectivity, blurred work–life boundaries and chronic stress. The World Health Organization defines burnout as resulting from chronic workplace stress not successfully managed, marked by exhaustion, mental distance and reduced effectiveness. Local social habits that interrupt the working day may mitigate isolation for some, but the high survey rates suggest Cyprus faces a complex problem of varied and widespread work-related fatigue.
