📰 President Christodoulides urges voters to turn out in parliamentary elections, says 'abstention is not an option'

President Nikos Christodoulides urged the public to participate in Sunday's parliamentary elections, saying 'abstention is not an option', after casting his vote at the First Primary School of Yeroskipou in Paphos alongside First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides. He described the vote as important because it concerns the legislative power of the country and highlighted recent reforms aimed at boosting turnout, including automatic voter registration and a law lowering the voting age to 17 for the next electoral cycle.

Christodoulides said the executive will respect the election outcome and that he is not anxious about the result. He said the government is prepared to cooperate with parties and MPs who share its ideological approach but rejected compromises detached from ideology, defending the need for a clear ideological direction and saying he voted within a framework of 'social liberalism' while declining to disclose his preference votes. He added he will follow the count later in the evening and also hoped for updates on the Olympiacos football final.
