EAC continues smart meter installations across Cyprus in June

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will continue installing smart electricity meters island-wide throughout June, targeting key areas in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Famagusta. These upgrades are part of a national program aiming to install 400,000 smart meters by June 2025, in cooperation with Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta). The EAC cautioned that electricity supply may be interrupted for up to 20 minutes during meter replacements and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

The rollout follows a contract signed in 2024 between the EAC and Cyta, despite initial legal challenges over Cyta’s eligibility. Parliament amended telecommunications law in May 2024 to allow Cyta to participate, ensuring the project’s continuation and safeguarding up to €35 million in European Commission recovery and resilience funds tied to smart meter deployment milestones.

Installation zones for June include industrial and residential neighborhoods in major cities and villages, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernize energy infrastructure and meet EU requirements. The overall project budget is approximately €125 per meter, with Cyta’s proposal deemed most suitable despite higher costs compared to competitors.
