🏗️ Padel's popularity soars in Cyprus with over 200 courts and growing player base
Padel, a fast-paced racquet sport played in pairs on a smaller enclosed court, is rapidly gaining popularity across Cyprus. The game, which combines elements of tennis and squash, is favored for its accessibility, social appeal, and lower physical demands, making it especially popular among older adults and newcomers to the island. Limassol is the padel capital of Cyprus, boasting 86 courts and more than 50 registered clubs nationwide.
The sport's simplicity, requiring only four players and featuring an underhand serve, appeals to those seeking an easy-to-learn, year-round activity. The Playtomic app further helps players find matches suited to their level, fostering community connections. Despite the surge in popularity, concerns are emerging about an oversaturation of new courts. Currently, there are about 95 pending license applications for padel facilities in Limassol alone, which could significantly increase the number of courts and impact pricing and demand.
For now, players benefit from increased availability and affordability compared to other countries. As the sport continues to expand, the challenge will be balancing growth with sustainable use of facilities, ensuring padel remains an enjoyable and accessible pastime for Cypriots.
