🏗️ New Argyroupoleos Avenue opens in Nicosia to improve traffic flow and road safety
Argyroupoleos Avenue officially opened to traffic on Thursday, providing a crucial new connection between Tseriou Avenue and the GSP roundabout, with direct access to the Nicosia-Limassol motorway. The €26 million project aims to enhance road safety and alleviate congestion on some of the capital’s busiest routes. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, along with Lakatamia mayor Photoula Hadjipapa and Strovolos mayor Stavros Stavrinides, attended the opening ceremony and praised the avenue as a significant infrastructure investment.
Although the road is now operational, some ancillary works, including pavement and cycle path sections, are still pending completion. The project took longer than initially planned, with delays leading to contractual measures and ongoing cost assessments by the public works department. Authorities will collect data on traffic patterns to evaluate how the new route redistributes vehicles across Nicosia’s main thoroughfares, expecting smoother traffic flows between Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, the highway, and Argyroupoleos Avenue.
Local officials highlighted the avenue’s importance in improving connectivity and reducing congestion. Hadjipapa emphasized the five-year goal to build the road as vital for better motorway access, while Stavrinides described the opening as a key day for Strovolos that would enhance the wider road network serving the capital.
