🎉 Larnaca's historic sites inspire artwork highlighting 1,000 years of Cyprus' cultural coexistence
In the heart of Larnaca, a five-minute walk connects three historic landmarks—the Church of Ayios Lazarus, the Djami Kebir Mosque, and the Larnaca Medieval Fort—encapsulating a millennium of Cyprus' Byzantine, Ottoman, and medieval history. Artist Ioanna Georgiou, inspired by this close proximity, created A Five-Minute Walk, an artwork symbolizing the intertwined cultural and religious narratives shaping the city.
Georgiou’s piece, made from found wood and acrylic paint, depicts intersecting labyrinths representing the vibrant, intertwined lives in Larnaca. Displayed at the Cyprus High Commission in London as part of The Island III exhibition, the work reflects on coexistence as an everyday experience shared by diverse communities. Georgiou emphasizes that Cyprus’ complex identity transcends simplified divisions, advocating for understanding and appreciation rooted in common spaces and daily interactions.
Living abroad has deepened Georgiou’s appreciation for Larnaca’s beauty and diversity, informing her perspective on Cyprus’ layered past and hopeful future. The exhibition continues until the end of June, highlighting Cyprus’ unique position as a cultural bridge between East and West.
