Larnaca district saves over €530,000 through renewable energy investments since July 2024

The Larnaca district local government has saved more than €530,000 through investments in renewable energy since July 2024, primarily by using photovoltaic systems across public facilities. Renewable sources met 19.2% of the district's energy needs during this period, significantly reducing electricity costs and supporting sustainability goals.

The authority operates solar systems totaling 855 kilowatts, including a 700-kilowatt system at the Larnaca wastewater treatment plant, the largest energy consumer. Recent upgrades aim to double the solar capacity to 1.4 MWp and increase energy independence, with an expected rise in annual solar output to over 1.24 million kilowatt-hours by 2026.

With a total investment of €1.15 million, largely funded by national and European programmes, the initiative exemplifies Larnaca’s commitment to sustainability and economic efficiency, projecting future savings of approximately €383,000 annually while enhancing public infrastructure energy efficiency.
