An international conference on sports tourism began in Nicosia, Cyprus, focusing on the sector’s role as a driver of sustainable development. The two-day event gathers ministers, EU officials, sports authorities, academics, and industry players to discuss the intersections of sport, tourism, regional development, innovation, and social cohesion.

Education, Sport and Youth Minister Athena Michaelidou emphasized the political significance of sports tourism at the European level, noting it is now regarded as a cross-cutting policy area beyond just events and visitor activities. Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis highlighted sports tourism’s rapid growth, making up about 10% of global tourist spending and contributing to Cyprus’ goal of becoming a year-round destination.

European Commissioner Glenn Micallef reinforced the importance of sports tourism in promoting healthier lifestyles and economic growth. Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos cautioned that cities must manage sports tourism carefully to avoid overtourism and infrastructure strain. The conference further advanced the EU’s structured approach to sport and tourism policy, advocating sustainability, social inclusion, and regional cohesion as core principles.
