🌊 Cyprus promotes responsible boating to protect endangered Mediterranean monk seal during summer tourism season

With the beginning of the summer tourism season, Cyprus is urging residents and visitors to adopt responsible behaviours to protect its unique marine biodiversity, especially the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The seal remains highly vulnerable to disturbances from increased marine traffic and coastal activities typical of this period.

The Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre, in collaboration with SPOT Marine Life and the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, has published a handbook offering best practices for sea users. Recommendations include maintaining a minimum distance of 100 metres from marine mammals, navigating slowly near animals, avoiding interaction, and not entering critical habitats such as sea caves.

These measures aim to minimize human impact on marine mammals and sea turtles, ensuring the conservation of these species amid growing marine tourism. Responsible boating and reporting of wildlife sightings are vital steps toward preserving Cyprus’ rich marine environment for future generations.
