🌍 European Parliament condemns Turkish invasion impact on Cypriot women, calls for support and peace talks
The European Parliament’s Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee adopted a resolution condemning the ongoing impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion on Cypriot women and girls. The resolution, passed by 28 votes to 4 with one abstention, highlights the continued occupation, conflict-related sexual violence, forced displacement, and long-term trauma experienced by survivors.
The resolution calls for accountability for crimes committed by Turkish forces and urges comprehensive support services, including trauma-informed counselling and reparations for survivors. It also emphasizes the need for the full and meaningful participation of Cypriot women in peace processes and supports the creation of a monument in Nicosia to honor women victims of sexual violence.
MEPs called for renewed UN-led reunification talks and the withdrawal of Turkish troops, reaffirming that a fair, bi-communal, bi-zonal federation remains the only viable solution. The resolution follows a committee mission to Cyprus and underscores the importance of recognizing survivors’ resilience and upholding European values and international law.
