👮 Videogate criminal investigation report due mid-June as legal experts highlight final decision process

The criminal investigation into the Videogate scandal is nearing completion, with independent investigator Andreas Paschalides expected to submit his report to Attorney-General George Savvides on June 16. The inquiry began after a video emerged allegedly showing discussions of pay-to-play schemes, campaign financing, and a €150 million investment involving prominent figures such as former chief of staff Charalambos Charalambous, who resigned following the revelations.

Legal experts emphasize that any decision to proceed with criminal charges will rest with the legal service, which will conduct its own assessment of the evidence. Lawyer Simos Angelides stressed that identifying evidence of criminal offences does not guarantee prosecution, and called for transparency by making the findings public once finalized.

The investigation has also delved into the origins and authenticity of the recordings, many made by Israeli intelligence company Black Cube, which admitted producing the footage to expose alleged corruption by Cyfield. The inquiry covers broader issues including corruption, abuse of power, bribery, and money laundering, as authorities continue to examine approximately 30 hours of recorded material secured for forensic analysis.
