👮 Cyprus Legalizes Use of In-Car Video Devices for Safety and Crime Prevention

Cyprus has amended its road safety laws to permit the installation and use of in-car video recording devices in various types of vehicles, effective July 23. The devices can be used to protect drivers in accidents, document traffic violations, and monitor commercial fleets for incidents of crime or collisions. This change applies to private, professional, government, and public sector vehicles.

The new legislation requires compliance with personal data protection rules, with violations potentially resulting in fines or penalties. Police and insurance companies are authorized to use the recordings for investigating traffic offenses and criminal activity. However, sharing footage publicly that identifies individuals is prohibited without consent, especially regarding minors.

Recorded footage will not automatically serve as admissible evidence in court; judges will determine its validity on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, the law empowers the commissioner for personal data protection to issue guidelines regulating the use and processing of in-car video data.
