🌊 European Commission launches OceanEye to bolster global ocean monitoring amid US cutbacks

The European Commission has announced OceanEye, a new initiative designed to enhance Europe's leadership in global ocean monitoring. The launch comes as the United States plans to wind down its Ocean Observatories Initiative, a critical deep-sea monitoring network that has provided valuable climate data for over a decade. Fisheries and Oceans Commissioner Costas Kadis emphasized that Europe's increased role is not just a goal but a necessity given the current international context.

OceanEye aims to fill the void left by the US's retreat by building an international alliance involving third countries, like-minded nations, and international organisations. The project is a key element of the EU’s 2025 Oceans Pact and will be supported by a €92 million budget from Horizon Europe, focusing on governance, digital ocean mapping, data systems, and innovation.

Research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva highlighted the strategic importance of ocean monitoring for environmental, economic, and security purposes. She noted that the initiative will incorporate dual-use and security-by-design principles to protect infrastructure while aiming to position Europe as a global leader in secure ocean intelligence technologies and the growing ocean monitoring market, currently worth up to €20 billion.
