🏗️ Limassol identifies 1,000 unsafe buildings, calls for stronger legal powers amid construction boom

The Limassol District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has identified approximately 1,000 unsafe buildings across the district, with 40 flagged for immediate intervention. The organisation, which took over responsibility in July 2024, inherited about 700 dangerous structures and has since increased the count following a new survey. DLGO's General Manager, Socrates Metaxas, emphasized the need for stronger legal authority to swiftly manage unsafe buildings, including powers to enter, seal off properties, and cut utilities, which current legislation does not allow.

Limassol is experiencing intense construction activity, with around 1,000 new applications for planning and building permits submitted monthly, predominantly for apartment blocks and tall buildings, especially along the Aktaia coastal road. Metaxas highlighted the district’s flexibility in approving large buildable floor areas, noting significant developments in urban areas stretching from Moni to Episkopi.

Since its inception, the DLGO has worked through a backlog of 8,500 pending cases, resolving about two-thirds, aiming to clear all inherited cases by year-end. Staffing is also expanding, with plans to employ about 500 staff by year-end to handle operations effectively and potential new responsibilities.
