💊 Cyprus Health Ministry Proposes New Bill to Increase Nurse-to-Patient Ratios in State Hospitals

The Cyprus Health Ministry has introduced a bill proposing to increase the nurse-to-patient ratios across various state hospital wards to address staffing challenges. Under the new plan, nurses in surgical, pathology, geriatrics, and midwifery wards would care for one additional patient per shift compared to current ratios—for example, moving from one nurse per five patients to one per six during morning shifts. Similar increases are proposed for psychiatric and dialysis wards.

Additionally, the bill allows doctors to adjust nurse-to-patient ratios based on case severity within legislative limits. The proposal also includes increasing the number of ward assistants, now required even for smaller patient groups, enhancing support staff availability.

These amendments are part of a broader package of health sector measures set to be announced soon by the health minister. The bill will be reviewed by the House Health Committee once parliament reconvenes.
