📰 Cyprus presidential race for House Speaker expands with three candidates and pivotal ADK support

The contest for the presidency of the Cyprus House of Representatives now features three candidates: DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos, DISY leader Annita Demetriou, and AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou. AKEL's Central Committee unanimously endorsed Stefanou, ensuring his place in the second round with support from AKEL and ALMA MPs. ADK holds the crucial votes, with indications that it leans towards backing Papadopoulos, which could prompt ELAM to follow and advance Papadopoulos to the second round.

DIKO faces internal pressure as it contemplates whether to continue supporting Papadopoulos or shift support to Demetriou. ADK is expected to announce its decision soon, considering scenarios including a split vote between Demetriou and Papadopoulos or abstaining. ELAM's support remains uncertain and may depend on committee presidency assurances.

AKEL's Political Bureau is authorized to negotiate with other parties to broaden support for Stefanou, even engaging DIKO. Talks about alternative candidates like DIKO deputy president Christiana Erotokritou emerged, but AKEL remains firm on Stefanou’s candidacy. The ongoing dynamics suggest a complex negotiation process as parties position themselves ahead of the House presidency vote.
