⚡ Cyprus launches CY-Alert emergency warning system with real-time mobile alerts
Cyprus has activated its CY-Alert emergency warning system, enabling authorities to send real-time alerts directly to mobile phones in targeted areas. The system uses Cell Broadcast technology to deliver messages rapidly to all compatible devices within a geographic zone, regardless of network provider or SIM card origin, and overrides silent mode for immediate attention.
Recipients will receive alerts with a distinctive sound, vibration, and clear instructions on the nature of the emergency and recommended safety measures. Importantly, the alerts do not require an internet connection or active mobile data. Cyprus becomes the 16th European country to adopt this EU-Alert standard system, enhancing public safety in emergencies.
Trial notifications will run between June 2 and June 15 in select communities, marked clearly as tests with no required action. Initial tests were conducted in Pissouri and Moniatis, with a nationwide test planned to simulate a missing person scenario. Users are advised to update their phones to the latest Android or iOS software to receive alerts, and a helpline is available for technical support.
