🧒 Visually impaired student accuses University of Cyprus of discrimination; university denies claims

A visually impaired student and her father have accused the University of Cyprus of discrimination and inadequate support during her studies and practical training. They allege that the student was evaluated without necessary accommodations and are requesting a full reassessment of her practical training grades, an independent review of courses, and an investigation into whether the lack of adjustments affected outcomes. A complaint has also been submitted alleging discrimination and unequal treatment based on disability.

The University of Cyprus strongly denied the allegations, stating that it provided multiple accommodations including funding for an escort and tutor, deadline extensions, and schedule modifications. The university expressed concern over what it called unsubstantiated claims and stressed its commitment to equal access, inclusion, and fair evaluation. Academic Affairs head Kleanthis Pissarides said the institution fulfilled its obligations and provided ample adjustments for the student.

Disability rights advocates emphasized that reasonable accommodations are legally required to remove barriers rather than preferential treatment. However, the case highlights ongoing challenges in fully implementing disability rights in Cypriot education. The dispute remains unresolved.
