Akel's politburo has decided to refer discussions regarding the election of the next House president to the party’s central committee, scheduled to meet on Wednesday. The politburo approved the handling of the matter so far but did not indicate whether it will support Akel secretary-general Stefanos Stefanou or Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos. No party holds an outright majority after the recent parliamentary election.

The politburo also conducted an initial assessment of Akel's election performance, calling it a significant success. Stefanos Stefanou highlighted the party’s increased votes and vote share, particularly noting strong support among young voters aged 18 to 24.

The vote for the next House president is set for Thursday following the official confirmation of MPs on May 25. The central committee will determine the framework for further consultations ahead of a final decision on the presidency.
