👮 Cyprus police union demands government intervention amid overtime dispute

The Cyprus police union Isotita has called for an urgent meeting involving President Nikos Christodoulides, Justice Minister Costas Fitiris, and Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis over ongoing disputes about police overtime and working conditions. The union alleges that recent changes to police working arrangements have drastically reduced rest days for frontline officers, from one day off every 20 working days to one day off every 76, resulting in up to 15 fewer rest days annually.

Spokesman Nikos Loizides criticized the police leadership for refusing dialogue and condemned a letter from the Justice Minister to Europol, calling it distorted and inaccurate with regard to operational officers' rest days. Loizides warned that if the government fails to initiate talks, the union will raise the issue in parliament and possibly pursue legal action.

The union disputes the justice ministry’s justification that changes were necessary for managing working hours and overtime, claiming police chief Arnaoutis acted beyond his authority without cabinet approval. Discussions about possible collective action or strikes remain ongoing within the union's internal bodies, with calls for solidarity from other police organizations.
