🌊 Dromolaxia-Meneou mayor urges immediate action to combat worsening coastal erosion
Kypros Andronikou, mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou, has called on authorities to urgently address the escalating problem of coastal erosion along the island’s shores. He highlighted significant erosion from the Pervolia Lighthouse to Meneou, which is hindering residents' and visitors' access to the sea and impacting local infrastructure and the economy.
Andronikou warned that parts of the Pervolia coastline are at immediate risk of collapse and have been temporarily cordoned off by the municipality due to the failure of state services to undertake necessary protective measures. Despite prior promises from officials for timely intervention, bureaucratic delays and a reversal of proposed breakwater construction by the environmental department have stalled critical actions.
The mayor stressed the need for swift implementation of conservation measures, criticizing the slow response of government agencies. He emphasized that erosion threatens not only his municipality but the wider region and urged the government to act promptly to safeguard the safety of residents and the thousands of tourists who visit Cyprus annually.
