📰 Paphos municipality delays renaming of Kemal Ataturk Street pending new regulations

Paphos municipality has postponed its decision to rename Kemal Ataturk Street, located in the Mouttalos neighborhood, citing administrative delays and awaiting guidance from the interior ministry. The street, named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey, has been the focus of renaming efforts since 2021 but remains unchanged. The municipality had voted to rename the street but has yet to propose an alternative name or act on the decision.

The delay is attributed to the municipality’s ongoing work to establish a formal framework for naming and renaming streets and squares. Currently, there are no regulations governing this process in Paphos. While the municipality claims to have sought guidance from the interior ministry, the ministry stated it has not received any such request and emphasized that street naming authority rests with local councils. The issue remains unresolved amid political sensitivities and administrative reorganization.
