👮 Cyprus Court Upholds Conviction of Famagusta Hotel Receptionist for Stealing Wi-Fi Revenue
The Court of Appeals in Cyprus has upheld the conviction and six-month suspended sentence of a Famagusta hotel receptionist found guilty of stealing €765 from sales of internet access tickets. The decision follows an investigation using electronic data from the hotel's Wi-Fi ticketing system, which revealed 71 specific incidents of ticket revenue skimming between April and October 2015.
An economist cross-referenced the Wi-Fi system records with the hotel's bookkeeping and identified hundreds of issued tickets with no corresponding payment. The court rejected defense claims that equipment faults or system unreliability caused the discrepancies, emphasizing that only proven incidents with no doubt about ticket usage were considered. Despite delays due to case complexity and COVID-19 disruptions, the court ruled the trial was fair and properly handled.
The appeals court took into account the appellant's clean record and health but noted similar cases received harsher penalties. Ultimately, it found no reason to overturn the verdict, affirming the six-month suspended sentence for the theft of Wi-Fi revenue from hotel guests.
