📰 Presidency of Cyprus House remains uncertain as DISY backs Annita Demetriou and AKEL keeps options open
The race for the Presidency of the Cyprus House of Representatives remains unsettled as political parties continue behind-the-scenes negotiations. DISY has confirmed Annita Demetriou's candidacy with a unanimous decision, highlighting her track record and strong election mandate. However, other major parties, notably AKEL, have yet to disclose their intentions.
AKEL is taking a cautious approach, planning to discuss the matter in its upcoming political bureau meeting. The party is considering multiple options, including backing DIKO's Nicolas Papadopoulos, ALMA’s Irene Charalambides, or even fielding its own candidate, party leader Stefanos Stefanou. Discussions with ALMA and other parties like DIKO and Direct Democracy are ongoing, as alliances remain fluid.
Meanwhile, ALMA has ruled out supporting Papadopoulos due to his ties with the governing coalition and is open to supporting Charalambides or abstaining if no suitable candidate emerges. ELAM maintains its stance against any candidate backed by AKEL or Demetriou. With the balance hinging on AKEL’s decision, the contest is poised for further rounds of talks and potential realignment before a final candidate emerges.
