💰 Cyprus Deputies Receive Substantial Tax-Free Salaries and Generous Pensions Amid Inequality Concerns

The remuneration package for Cyprus deputies has come under scrutiny for its generous allowances and pensions, which many argue are disproportionate to their part-time legislative roles. Deputies earn a gross annual salary of €56,300, which increases to €99,600 when tax-free allowances are included. These allowances, totaling €43,000, are exempt from taxation—a privilege not extended to other professions.

Moreover, deputies are entitled to substantial retirement benefits. After five years in office, they receive a €90,000 retirement bonus and a monthly pension of €1,600. Those serving more than two terms may receive up to €250,000 and €4,500 monthly pension, respectively. Unlike most citizens, deputies can retire at 60 with full pension rights and enjoy tax-free retirement bonuses—a privilege also shared by ministers but unavailable to the wider workforce.

Critics highlight this as institutionalized inequality, emphasizing that such benefits far exceed those of private sector workers and many public employees. Calls for reform face resistance, as political parties and representatives seem unlikely to relinquish these advantages voluntarily, leaving the public to demand change.
