Cyprus has officially introduced CY Alert, its first nationwide real-time emergency warning platform, designed to enhance public safety through Cell Broadcast technology. The system sends alerts directly to mobile devices within affected areas without internet or app requirements, bypassing silent or mute settings, and delivering messages in both Greek and English.

Authorities emphasize that the new platform targets smartphones and compatible older devices supporting Cell Broadcast, addressing concerns about elderly residents and those in remote communities who may not use smartphones. To ensure broad coverage, CY Alert operates alongside traditional sirens and direct SMS messaging, forming a multi-layered emergency communication package.

The system is expected to be fully operational next week, with testing scheduled between June 2 and June 15. A dedicated support line has also been launched to assist users with technical issues. This rollout follows criticism from delayed or incomplete notifications during previous emergencies such as the Limassol fires.
