👮 SBA Police Crackdown on Illegal Hunting Dog Training in Protected Cyprus Areas
The Sovereign Base Areas Police and the SBA Environment Department have launched joint operations to halt illegal training of hunting dogs in protected zones at Akrotiri, Episkopi, and Paramali. This activity violates the Game and Wild Birds Ordinance, as it poses a serious threat to vital habitats for migratory and breeding bird species.
SBA Environment Officer Alexia Perdiou emphasized that many birds nest on the ground or in low vegetation, making them highly vulnerable to disturbances caused by dog training. Such disruptions can lead to birds abandoning nests, exposing eggs and chicks to predators. Fixed-penalty notices are being issued, and dog training is banned throughout SBA territory.
SBA Police Inspector Tony Demetriou stated that offenders face a €300 fine or up to two years in prison with additional fines upon conviction. Monitoring efforts include the use of drones and specialized equipment, with operations ongoing. Illegal dog-training activities can be reported to SBA Police on 1443.
