📰 Cyprus Parliamentary Elections Shift Political Landscape to the Right

The recent 24 May parliamentary elections in Cyprus have resulted in a significant shift to the right, creating the most right-leaning chamber since 1976. Centre-right and right-wing parties DISY, ELAM, and DIKO now hold 33 out of 56 seats, accounting for about two-thirds of the parliament. The Presidential Palace has welcomed this outcome, anticipating a favorable environment for key legislation over the next two years.

These parties generally share common views on foreign policy, social issues, EU relations, and economic matters, suggesting a more cohesive parliamentary approach. Meanwhile, the election results have also altered the dynamics ahead of the 2028 presidential race. Although President Nikos Christodoulides remains a strong candidate, his dominance is challenged by DISY's maintained strength under Annita Demetriou and ELAM's increased presence with eight seats.

The political reshuffling highlights a new era in Cypriot politics, setting the stage for upcoming policy decisions and electoral contests.
