⚡ Expert urges Cyprus to adopt coherent long-term energy strategy beyond election slogans
Andreas Poullikkas, professor of energy systems at Frederick University and former chairman of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority, has called for Cyprus to move beyond pre-election rhetoric and develop a comprehensive, evidence-based national energy strategy. He emphasized that the new House of Representatives provides a vital opportunity to focus on long-term planning aligned with Cyprus’ commitments under the European Green Deal.
Poullikkas criticized the recent election discourse for focusing excessively on electricity prices without addressing critical aspects such as security of supply, renewable energy penetration, and energy efficiency across transport, buildings, industry, and heating sectors. He highlighted the need for continuous, scientifically grounded policies supported by cross-party agreements to avoid policy fragmentation.
The professor stressed Cyprus’ binding EU obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy systems by 2050 and urged the new government to establish a stable framework ensuring social fairness and investment in sustainable technologies. He called for parliamentary committees to base legislation on thorough techno-economic analysis, emphasizing that ultimate responsibility lies with the executive to formulate and maintain a coherent long-term energy policy.
