📰 Nearly One-Third of Cyprus MPs Have Legal Backgrounds, Reflecting Continued Trend
In the recent elections in Cyprus, 17 out of 56 elected Members of Parliament (MPs) come from legal professions, marking about 30.36% of the total, an uptick from the previous 20% in 2021. This continuation of lawyers entering politics is noted for both its benefits and its challenges. While legal expertise is useful in legislative processes, the parliament has faced issues with procedural errors and unconstitutional laws despite this professional proficiency.
Among the parties, the Democratic Rally (DISY) leads with six MPs holding legal qualifications, followed by the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) and the Democratic Party (DIKO). Other parties including Direct Democracy Cyprus, ALMA, and National Popular Front (ELAM) also have legal professionals as MPs. This diversity indicates a broad representation of legal knowledge across the political spectrum in Cyprus.
