Cyprus commemorated the eighth anniversary of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a pivotal law that transformed privacy and data protection standards across the EU. The GDPR, which came into effect in 2016, enhanced transparency, boosted citizens' rights, and heightened organizational accountability concerning personal data handling. Furthermore, it established a standardized regulatory environment in all EU and EEA member states, supported by the inception of the European Data Protection Board in 2018, boosting enforcement consistency and cross-border collaboration. Marking the occasion, Cyprus' Commissioner for Personal Data Protection emphasized the regulation's growing significance in today's digitally-driven age, with increasing concerns like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity threats. The authority reaffirmed its dedication to protecting privacy rights, underscoring that data protection is a crucial basis for public trust in digital services and institutions, while highlighting the shared responsibility for data protection.
