👮 Heavy Penalties for Illegal Hunting Dog Training in Cyprus' Sovereign Base Areas

Authorities in Cyprus have issued a stern warning that people caught training hunting dogs illegally in protected Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) could incur a €300 fine or face up to two years in prison and a €3,417 fine. Since January, joint operations by the SBA police and environment department have been targeting this illicit activity, particularly in Akrotiri, Episkopi, and Paramali. Training hunting dogs in these areas disrupts vital habitats for migratory and breeding bird species, with potential penalties escalating if the matter goes to court.

Police inspector Tony Demetriou highlighted the use of drones and specialized equipment to monitor these protective zones intensively. Environment officer Alexia Perdiou emphasized the severe impact on bird populations, noting that hunting dog training during the breeding season can cause birds to abandon their nests, making them susceptible to predators. The authorities continue to advocate for the cessation of dog training in these ecological hotspots to safeguard critical wildlife.
