A woman in Nicosia lost €24,800 due to a scam involving online fraud and extortion, as confirmed by the police on Wednesday. The victim was deceived by callers pretending to help secure her purportedly hacked online payment and bank accounts. After being told her accounts were compromised, she provided her online banking passwords to the fraudsters on May 19, enabling them to siphon the funds. The financial crime unit is currently investigating the incident. Authorities are now cautioning the public against sharing personal banking details and passwords, emphasizing the importance of verifying suspicious communications through official channels.
