📰 One in three citizens abstained in Cyprus's 13th parliamentary elections

A third of registered voters stayed away from the ballot box in the 13th parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cyprus. Out of 569,182 registered voters, 188,088 people — 33.09% — did not vote, marking the third consecutive parliamentary election in which abstention emerged as the largest ‘force’. In the hours after results were announced, political leaders addressed their parties' performances but did not publicly address the high abstention rate.

Election analysts and experts say the abstention trend is concentrated among younger voters and is not tied to a single party or ideology; many non-voters describe frustration with politicians. Despite repeated warnings after past elections, parties have not reversed the trend, and analysts warn that sustained high abstention poses a long-term challenge for Cyprus’s representative institutions and democratic legitimacy.
