📰 Deputy Gov Spokesman Expects President Christodoulides to Seek Re-election in 2028
Deputy Government Spokesman Giannis Antoniou expressed his anticipation that President Nikos Christodoulides would seek re-election in the 2028 elections during an interview with Sigma TV. Antoniou indicated that the President's decision would depend on the future political landscape and would be announced by the end of the first half of 2027. He emphasized that while historical precedents with AKEL suggest caution when predicting electoral outcomes, common sense points toward another run by Christodoulides.
Regarding recent parliamentary results, Antoniou noted a shift to the right with major parties stabilizing, although it is still premature to link these results with future presidential elections. In addition, he commented on a possible cabinet reshuffle following the reshuffle in the education department and reiterated that any decision about such changes remains the President's prerogative. Antoniou also addressed questions about the political positioning of DISY and potential leadership moves within DIKO and EDEK, underscoring the dynamic nature of the Cypriot political scene.
