💰 Cyprus unemployment rate falls to 3.1% in May 2026, well below EU average
Cyprus' seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.1% in May 2026, continuing its steady decline from 3.2% in April and 4.5% a year earlier, according to Eurostat. The number of unemployed in the country fell to approximately 16,000, significantly lower than May 2025's 24,000. This places Cyprus among the EU nations with the lowest unemployment rates, surpassed only by Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.
The broader euro area recorded an unemployment rate of 6.2% in May 2026, stable compared to the previous month, while the EU overall stood at 5.9%. Youth unemployment in Cyprus also improved, with a rate of 12.5% reported in March 2026, down from 15.1% a year earlier. Across Europe, youth unemployment remains higher than the general rate, reaching 15.2% in the EU and 14.7% in the euro area.
The data further showed slight monthly variations in unemployment rates between men and women across Europe, with women's rates mostly stable and men's rates declining slightly. Cyprus continues to outperform regional averages, reflecting a strong labour market relative to other EU countries.
