🌍 Cyprus Government urges Turkey to show constructive intent for Cyprus talks ahead of NATO summit
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that Turkey is the only party required to demonstrate a constructive will for progress in resolving the Cyprus problem. Speaking on Thursday, he highlighted ongoing consultations under UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, noting the importance of Turkey’s cooperation for future steps.
Letymbiotis referenced a recent joint declaration involving EU officials and Turkey’s foreign minister, underscoring their support for Guterres’ efforts. He also pointed to statements by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin recognizing the EU’s role and reiterating commitment to restart substantive negotiations.
With the NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara upcoming, attended by key figures including European Council President Antonio Costa and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, opportunities for important discussions are expected. Letymbiotis reiterated Cyprus’ goal to convene an informal multilateral meeting involving the island’s two sides, guarantor powers, and the UN this summer, aiming at resuming talks to definitively resolve the Cyprus problem.
