Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides Proposes Ambitious Bid to Co-Host Future FIFA World Cup

During a World Cup broadcast punditry role, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides suggested that Cyprus could aim to co-host a FIFA World Cup alongside neighboring countries such as Greece, Israel, and Egypt. He referenced Cyprus's recent experience co-hosting Eurobasket and the 2024 Under-17 European football championships as stepping stones toward this ambitious goal.

However, Cyprus faces major challenges, particularly with stadium infrastructure. The island's largest stadium, Nicosia’s GSP Stadium, holds only 22,859 spectators, well below FIFA’s minimum 40,000 seating requirement for World Cup matches. Other stadiums are either closed, lack seating capacity, or are not up to modern standards.

While Cyprus has enough training sites and hotels to meet FIFA’s requirements, the stadium deficit appears to be the biggest hurdle. Christodoulides noted co-hosting with countries like Greece, Egypt, or Turkey—each with larger and modern stadiums—could make hosting feasible. Though costly and complex, the president views setting such high goals as necessary for Cyprus’s sporting future.
