🧒 Overcrowded and understaffed pediatric oncology unit at Makarios Hospital amid ongoing renovations

The pediatric oncology department at Makarios Hospital is currently overcrowded and understaffed, with 15 children being cared for by only two nurses during a recent night shift, according to the President of the Parents' Association for Children with Cancer. The issue of chronic staff shortages was raised during a Health Committee meeting in the Cypriot Parliament. Renovation works costing around €70 million are underway at six locations within and around the hospital to upgrade its 45-year-old infrastructure.

The General Financial Director of the Cyprus Health Organization (OKYPY) confirmed ongoing projects, including the completion of the pediatric surgery clinic scheduled for mid-July with slight delays, and the construction of a new emergency department expected to finish by early next year. Efforts are being made to minimize noise and disturbance for patients, especially in sensitive areas like the pediatric oncology unit. The hospital administration also plans to recruit additional nursing staff soon.

Parliamentary members from multiple parties emphasized the absolute need to protect the health, safety, and psychological wellbeing of the young patients during these works. They praised the hospital staff for their dedication and called for strict adherence to renovation timelines and noise reduction measures. Additionally, a new embassy position was created in Paris to support patients and families traveling abroad for treatment, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve patient care and support.
