🌦️ Cyprus urged to adopt unified water management system to ensure long-term water adequacy
Constantinos Yiorkadjis, president of the Nicosia district government organisation (EOA), emphasized the urgent need for Cyprus to adopt a modern, unified water management system to secure water adequacy for future generations. Yiorkadjis stated that the necessary infrastructure and expertise are already in place; the key challenge is establishing a comprehensive national strategy that treats water not only as a natural resource but as a matter of environmental sustainability and national security.
Yiorkadjis called for the creation of an independent water management authority responsible for integrating all water sources including reservoirs, desalination plants, recycled water, and rainwater, while coordinating policies and protecting vulnerable consumers. He underlined the importance of tailored district-level measures, improved transparency, and strategic planning to shift from reactive crisis management to preventive infrastructure development.
Pointing out the underutilization of valuable water resources, Yiorkadjis highlighted that only 40% of the island's annual 45 million cubic metres of water production is used, with significant resources from treated sewage and rainwater left untapped. He compared Cyprus' fragmented management approach unfavorably to the unified systems already adopted by many EU countries, including Greece.
