🌴 Audit Office reveals major flaws in Cyprus’ tourist accommodation licensing and supervision system

A recent Audit Office report has exposed serious deficiencies in Cyprus’ licensing and supervision of tourist accommodation, with only 23% of establishments holding full operating licences. The report highlights that 55% operate without full licences and 22% under temporary licences, raising concerns about compliance with safety and quality regulations.

The situation is especially critical in the Famagusta district, where less than 10% of accommodations are fully licensed. The report also notes widespread unregistered self-catering properties and weaknesses in the Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s subsidy schemes, including poor monitoring and lack of safeguards against double funding.

Citing the Germasogeia apartment collapse as evidence, the Audit Office calls for urgent reforms including improved inspection mechanisms, digital management systems, and stricter enforcement. It warns that the current lax environment threatens visitor safety, the integrity of tourism services, and Cyprus’ international reputation.
