Restoration begins at historic Ayios Demetrianos church in Lapithos

Restoration work has commenced at the Ayios Demetrianos church in Lapithos, with a nine-month conservation program aimed at preserving the historic site. This project, funded by the European Union and local community contributions, is being overseen by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Simultaneous maintenance efforts are underway at over 70 cemeteries and religious sites, according to Sotos Ktoris, co-chair of the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage. The contract also covers restoration work at the Ayios Charalambos church in Agridaki, Kyrenia district.

Ayios Demetrianos is notable as the main church of the village of Larnaka tis Lapithos and is near the site of an important archaeological find—a unique Greco-Phoenician inscription known as the Anat-Athena Bilingual from the 4th century BC, carved into the Kyrenia mountains.
