Renewable electricity generation in Cyprus reaches 36.88% in May but still lags behind EU average

Cyprus has seen a steady increase in the share of electricity generated from renewable sources, reaching 36.88 percent in May 2026, according to recent Eurostat data. Despite this progress, the island nation remains below the European Union average, which stood at 45.5 percent for the first quarter of the year. Cyprus generated approximately 23.5 percent of its electricity from renewables in the same period, ranking among the EU’s bottom five nations for renewable energy share.

The increase in Cyprus’ renewable generation has been gradual, starting at 19.71 percent in January and rising each month through to May. However, the country still faces challenges with unused solar energy during peak production due to limited energy storage capacity. Across the EU, wind power remains the leading renewable source, followed by hydropower and solar energy.

Elsewhere in the EU, Denmark leads with 90 percent of its electricity generated from renewable sources, primarily wind power, followed by Portugal and Lithuania. The EU overall has increased its renewable energy share from 42.7 percent last year to 45.5 percent in early 2026, reflecting a continuing shift toward cleaner energy across the region.
